Leona er interessert i hva det vil si å være menneske i den digitale tidsalderen.
Forskningen hennes fokuserer på hvordan mennesker bruker informasjonssystemer til arbeid og fritid, og spesielt hvordan teknologiene bør utformes for å gi mennesker støtte, glede og trygghet. Hun undersøker eldre og nye teknologier, som beslutningsstøttesystemer, digitale ledsagere, ikke-soppbare symboler og oppslukende teknologier, samt innovative måter å ta i bruk disse teknologiene på, som virtuell vinsmaking, hybride opplevelser og design av digitale tilbud.
Forskningen hennes har blitt belønnet med flere priser:
- AIS Senior Scholar's beste publikasjon om informasjonssystemer i 2018 (tema: IS for bærekraftig omstilling)
- Prisen for årets artikkel i 2018 fra European Jounal of Information Systems (tema: IS for bærekraftig transformasjon)
- Andreplass i kåringen av beste artikkel i 2022 fra Journal of Information Technology (tema: digitalisering av multisensoriske aktiviteter)
- SIGBIT 2023 for beste artikkel om Web3 og tokenisering (tema: NFT og kunstnerisk skapelse)
- Dissertasjonspris fra Universitetet i Liechtenstein (tema: designkunnskap fra forskning)
- Deltaker som ung økonom ved det 7. Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting on Economic Sciences
Hun har blant annet bidratt til forskning på informasjonssystemer på følgende måter:
- Seniorredaktør for European Journal of Information Systems (ABS 4, VHB A).
- Ledende medlem av AIS Special Interest Group in Pragmatism (AIS' interessegruppe for pragmatisme)
- Leder for doktorgradskonsortiet for DESRIST 2024
