Frequently asked questions

Who can apply?

If you have a disability or other special needs, you can apply for individual adaptation of your study everyday life. This may include visual or hearing impairments, mobility impairments, mental health challenges, dyslexia, cognitive difficulties, or chronic illnesses and injuries. You can also apply if you have other needs than those mentioned here.

What can I apply to?

You can apply for specific measures that do not reduce the academic requirements in your education. Examples of measures you can apply for:

  • Exam accommodations: See more information on our page about examinations.
  • Extension of deadlines for assignment submission: You can apply for an extended deadline for compulsory assignments. The reason for the need must be clearly stated, and documentation must be attached. More information and application form.
  • Additional grant from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund (Lånekassen): Students in higher education who cannot work alongside their education due to reduced functional ability can apply for an additional grant. Contact Lånekassen for more information.

How to get help for hearing impairment?

  • Teachers should use a microphone: A microphone provides the opportunity to participate in lectures and other teaching activities and achieve equitable learning outcomes. Do not hesitate to inform the lecturer if you have this need. If you use hearing aids, you can use wireless or room-installed equipment that transmits sound directly into the hearing aids from the microphone. You lose this opportunity if a microphone is not used.
  • Classrooms: Auditoriums at UiA have speaker systems and microphones. This does not apply to classrooms and group rooms, but it is possible to apply to NAV for the loan of equipment, such as a separate microphone that the teacher can wear. The sound is then transmitted wirelessly directly to hearing aids/CIs, or via a suitable receiver.
  • Sign language interpreter and writing interpreter: If you need a sign language interpreter or writing interpreter, please contact NAV Tolketjenesten (Interpreter Service). We recommend that you do so immediately after admission to the studies because demand is high.

Parking and access to buildings

  • Parking: If you have mobility issues, you may be entitled to special transport and parking arrangements on campus. There are handicapped parking spaces adjacent to each building that you can use if you have a blue parking card issued by the municipality. See the overview of parking at UiA.
  • Accessibility: UiA has modern and accessible facilities. It is recommended that you familiarise yourself with the campus. UiA Mazemap is a navigation system that helps you find your way to buildings, lecture halls, offices, and meeting rooms where you can choose an accessibility mode that shows you the quickest route, free of obstacles.
