How to apply as an exchange student

Thinking of spending an exchange semester or two at UiA? Here's a step by step guide to help you navigate through the process.

Application periods:

  • For studies beginning in August (Autumn Semester): 1 February - 1 May
  • For studies beginning in January (Spring Semester): 1 February - 15 October
  • Summer School (EISS): 1 December - 1 April

Nomination 

To come to UiA as an exchange student, you must be nominated by one of our partner institutions.

UiA does not accept free-movers. Without an agreement in place, we can not accept your application.

Step 1: Log in 

Once you have been nominated by your home university, you will receive two emails:

  1. Instructions on how to apply
  2. Password for the ApplicationWeb

ApplicationWeb

  1. Select English language in the top menu
  2. Choose «Login International Applicant»
  3. Log in with the email address and the password you received (do not register as a new international applicant)
  4. If you forgot your password, you can order a new one by entering your email address and click on "send me a new password"

Step 2: Register your profile

  1. Enter your complete home address, including street name, house number, postal code and area name.
  2. Enter your phone number with no space in between the numbers. Do not forget to add the country code (for example +47). 
  3. Enter your full name in this format (first name, last name): Paul Smith. Do not use only capital letters.

The following three questions are aimed at full degree applicants, but you need to reply to continue:

  • Do you apply with non-formal competence? - Choose NO
  • Use of electronic diploma(s) from secondary education -  Choose NO
  • Exchange of exam results with other institutions - Choose NO

Click "Next" to save and continue.

Step 3: Choose courses

1: Choose application alternative 

  • Choose the campus you have been nominated to and relevant semester.
  • Summer School students must select "Campus Kristiansand - Summer"

2: Choose courses

  • Select courses from the course list and discuss your choices with your home coordinator.
  • Select the agreed upon courses from the drop-down menu  
  • Remember to prioritize your selected courses
  • We recommend applying for extra courses in case of timetable clashes or not being qualified for a course.

One full semester consists of 30 ECTS credits. If you are planning to write your Bachelor/Master Thesis you must still enroll in and take courses worth a minimum of 20 ECTS. We do not offer thesis supervisors.

Step 4: Required documents

All documents must be in English or a Scandinavian Language, and fully legible. Documents in other languages, or incomplete/illegible applications will not be considered. It is your responsibility to provide us with the required documents by the deadline. 

All applicants must upload: 

  • Transcript of records (ToR) for all completed higher education courses/units. For master students, you must upload the Transcript of Records from both your bachelor and master.
  • List of courses you are currently enrolled in/taking this semester at your home institution. The list must include course code, course name and ECTS. Please note that the list must be validated by your home institution (for example an official document, or a self-made document that is signed and stamped by your home institution) 

Please label the documents with your first and last name, i.e. "John Smith, Transcript of Records". The documents must be uploaded as PDF or jpg file.

For Non-EU/EEA Nationals:

  • Statement of sufficient funds verified by home institution

The student must upload a statement signed by their home institution, stating that they have sufficient funding to finance their stay in Norway. 

The amount is based on living expenses and is adjusted yearly in March: 

  • Autumn 2024: NOK 68 950
  • Spring 2025: NOK 82 740
  • Two semesters or more: NOK 151 690

The home institution can base the confirmation on this information provided by the student: 

  • Bank statement in the students name which shows sufficient funding (in any currency as long as it is equivalent to the amount listed below) or
  • Letter/confirmation that you will receive a scholarship/ grant / student loan, or
  • Letter from parents where they confirm the relationship with the student and that they will support your stay in Norway financially, together with a bank statement in parents name

We do not accept bank statements uploaded to your application.

Courses Requiring Additional Documentation:

  • FRI109 + FRI111 "Outdoor Education": Letter of motivation (approx. 300 words) See template under "Admission Requirements"
  • TFL903 "NORSEC": Certificate of good conduct issued by the police (This is mandatory for participation in school practice or school visits). Please note that the certificate should not be more than three months old. 
  • PED221 + PED237 "Comparative Education": Certificate of good conduct issued by the police (This is mandatory for participation in school practice or school visits). Please note that the certificate should not be more than three months old. 
  • Practical Placement in Health and Social Sciences: Certificate of good conduct issued by the police (This is mandatory for participation in school practice or school visits). Please note that the certificate should not be more than three months old. 
  • NOU-courses: All courses starting with NOU are taught in Norwegian and your transcript of records should reflect your Norwegian language skills. Please confirm which courses have been taught in Norwegian and whether the required reading is in Norwegian.
  • NO-169 Norwegian for International Students, Intermediate level 2: Documentation that you qualify for an intermediate level (Transcript of previous Norwegian Courses or personal letter explaining the basis of your Norwegian language level)
  • Music students
    • If you are applying for performance-based courses at the Department of Classical Music and Music Education, you are required to send a recording of a performance with your main instrument. The recording can be either audio or video – or a combination.  Please send the files to linn.eriksen@uia.no. Remember to mark the files with your full name.     • If you are applying for performance-based courses at the Department of Popular Music, you are required to send a motivation letter and attend a mandatory interview. Please see more information on this page. Remember to upload the motivation letter to your ApplicationWeb.
  • Visual Art And Drama: 
    • If you are applying for courses at the Department of Visual Arts and Drama, you are required to send a motivation letter. Please see more information on this page. Remember to upload the motivation letter to your ApplicationWeb.

Changes to your application

You can make changes to your application (if needed) or upload additional documents until the application deadline 1 May (Autumn Semester) / 15 October (Spring Semester)

To be included in the early admission in April, make sure you complete your application and submit all your documents by 1 April.

Normally all nominated exchange students are accepted for studies at UiA. You will receive your Letter of Acceptance around one month after the deadline, together with information about semester start and instructions on how to apply for accommodation.
