What makes a good buddy?

Simply put: Be kind!

"Your buddy group members always come first." The buddy programme is designed to support new students, and as a buddy you will have a significant responsibility. While being a buddy should be fun, we also expect you to reflect on your role and take your duties seriously.

Things to be aware of

  • Those who speak the least may be most worthwhile to listen to. Ensure everyone is included.
  • Remember not to skip anything when explaining things to new students, as what seems obvious to you might not be to them.
  • More than half of the new students have relocated to this area and need to establish a network and become familiar with the campus and the town.
  • Even for locals, being a student is a new experience. There is a lot they may not be familiar with.
