Alcohol and drug policy

No one should be subjected to undue pressure to drink, or have to explain why they don't drink. The buddies are expected to set a positive example, and should never be excessively drunk or under the influence of illegal substances.

New students at UiA

  • should feel safe at all events
  • should not have to explain why they choose not to drink
  • should be able to alert their buddies or the buddy team if they feel any undue pressure, or if others are exhibiting drunk or unpleasant behaviour, and expect action to be taken in response
  • should report their concerns to the buddy team/UiA if the buddies do not fulfill their obligations
  • have zero tolerance for illegal substances

Buddies at UiA

  • are committed to including all members of the buddy group and actively countering peer pressure to drink
  • should always remain sober enough to fulfill their responsibilities as buddies 
  • when collaborating with other buddies, at least one buddy must always stay sober
  • must ensure that all members of the buddy group feel safe and secure
  • must take any reports of concerns or messages from buddy group members seriously and promptly forward them to the buddy team or UiA when necessary
  • should feel confident in discussing any matters with the buddy team, with the  expectation of being taken seriously
  • have zero tolerance for illegal substances 

Buddy Team at UiA

  • adheres to the expectations set for buddies
  • strives to ensure that alcohol does not take centre stage when getting to know each other and ensure that the majority of the activities we organise don't directly focus on alcohol
  • expects and encourages buddy group members to make their own conscious choices regarding whether to consume alcohol or not
  • ensures the buddies are given training on how to avoid negative alcohol consumption and peer pressure
  • should give guidance to buddy group members or buddies to ensure they get home safe when needed
  • should assist buddies/ buddy group members who may need help
  • should maintain zero tolerance for illegal substances 

Consequences

Possible consequences for breaching the outlined rules:

  • warning, suspension, or loss of buddy privileges
  • summoning to a meeting with the UiA semester start team
  • cutting buddy wristband and confiscation of buddy t-shirt
  • criminal offences will be reported to the police
