  Let X be a Banach space, Σ be a σ-algebra, and be a (countably additive) vector measure. It is a well known consequence of the Davis-Figiel-Johnson-Pełczyński factorization procedure that there exist a reflexive Banach space Y, a vector measure and an injective operator such that m factors as . We elaborate some theory of factoring vector measures and their integration operators with the help of the isometric version of the Davis-Figiel-Johnson-Pełczyński factorization procedure. Along this way, we sharpen a result of Okada and Ricker that if the integration operator on is weakly compact, then is equal, up to equivalence of norms, to some where Y is reflexive; here we prove that the above equality can be taken to be isometric.

  This paper presents results from a pilot study into students’ perceptions of the relevance of mathematics. Cultural historical activity theory is used as an analytical perspective. Data are collected through interviews supported by classroom observation. Convenience and purposive sampling were used to select the school and students. Findings indicate that students perceive that only basic mathematics is used in their everyday activities whereas the mathematics they are learning at the moment: has an indirect relevance through other subjects or used by professionals; has use in their future studies; has an exchange value in the market place of joining the university and getting job; and in mathematics they experience a sense of identity, empowerment, spirituality, and trust in the curriculum and their teacher.

  Let X and Y be Banach spaces. We give a \non-separable" proof of theKalton{Werner{Lima{Oja theorem that the subspace K(X;X) of compact operators formsan M-ideal in the space L(X;X) of all continuous linear operators from X to X if andonly if X has Kalton's property (M_) and the metric compact approximation property.Our proof is a quick consequence of two main results. First, we describe how Johnson'sprojection P on L(X; Y )_ applies to f 2 L(X; Y )_ when f is represented via a Borel(with respect to the relative weak_ topology) measure on BX__ BY _w__ L(X; Y )_: IfY _ has the Radon{Nikod_ym property, then P \passes under the integral sign". Our basictheorem en route to this description|a structure theorem for Borel probability measureson BX__ BY _w_|also yields a description of K(X; Y )_ due to Feder and Saphar. Second,we show that property (M_) for X is equivalent to every functional in BX__ BX_w_behaving as if K(X;X) were an M-ideal in L(X;X).

  Precise conditions for a subset A of a Banach space X are known in order that pointwise bounded on A sequences of bounded linear functionals on X are uniformly bounded. In this paper, we study such conditions under the extra assumption that the functionals belong to a given linear subspace G of X*. When Gamma = X*, these conditions are known to be the same ones assuring a bounded linear operator into X, having A in its image, to be onto. We prove that, for A, deciding uniform boundedness of sequences in G is the same property as deciding surjectivity for certain classes of operators.

  Thin and thick sets in normed spaces were defined and studied by M.I. Kadets and V.P. Fonf in 1983. In this paper, we give a new characterization of thick sets in terms of weak integrability of Banach space valued measurable functions. We also characterize thick sets in terms of boundedness of vector measures, and explain how this concept is related to the theory of barrelled spaces.

  We define Rainwater sets as subsets of the dual of a Banach space for which Rainwater's theorem holds and show that (I)-generating subsets have this property. We apply this observation to give a proof of James' theorem when the dual unit ball is sequentially compact in its weak-star topology.

Finally we will introduce the concept of "(I)-generating set", "Rainwater set" and "James boundary" and tell some story about these kind of sets, in particular we indicate a proof of James' characterization of reflexive spaces for weakly compactly generated spaces.
