  Self-reformulation is when a speaker produces a “second saying” of something, changing the wording but keeping the semantic content more or less unaltered. This conversational practice may constitute a method for avoiding potential understanding problems in talk addressed to second language users. Speakers preempt problems by substituting a potentially problematic word or construction with a version that is more recipient designed—that is, better adapted to the assumed linguistic competence and background knowledge of the interlocutor. The reformulations are self-initiated but may be triggered by a lack of response by the interlocutor. They may substitute for the original formulation by an alternative referring expression or by an explanation of word meaning. While most reformulations display an orientation to simplifying the wording, some instances involve reformulation from an everyday term to a technical one, displaying an orientation to language teaching.   When interviewed by the police, suspects are to be informed that they have the right to remain silent and the right to obtain the assistance of a defence counsel. This article presents a conversation analytic study of how it is established in interaction whether a suspect wants to go through with the interview or end it by invoking their legal rights. The data is a corpus of audio recordings of authentic police interviews conducted in Norway. First, we present a quantitative measure of how often suspects are asked explicit questions about whether they want to exercise their right to silence and/or to legal counsel. Second, we investigate variation in the design of such questions, concentrating specifically on expressions involving a preference for one response option over the other. Third, we discuss formulations used while presenting the rights that may legitimise or inhibit a free and independent decision. The results show that suspects are often not asked to take a stance on their rights, and when they are, such questions often involve a bias towards waiving their rights. And although some officers explicitly inform the suspects that they are free to choose whatever option they like, others provide information about the interview that either presupposes willingness to talk or presents the option of waiving one’s rights as preferable to invoking them. These findings have important implications for the safeguarding of suspects’ rights and form the basis for recommendations to the police about how to give suspects the opportunity to take a stance on their legal rights.

  Aim and objectives/purpose/research questions: The aim of this study is to examine the pragmatic function of utterance-level declination as used in conversations in French and Norwegian by 10 migrants from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) living in Norway whose repertoires are highly multilingual. Design/methodology/approach: To investigate this contour, we draw on insights from different fields, that is, research on multilingualism, Conversation Analysis (CA), and phonetics/phonology. Data and analysis: By an automatic procedure, we examined pitch variations of 400 declarative utterances (200 in Norwegian and 200 in French). The procedure found that 38 of the utterances have declination. These were then analyzed qualitatively with methods from CA in the context of the sequence. The aim of the CA was to assess the pragmatic functions of the contour. Findings/conclusions: We found that utterance-level declination is a marked contour, that is, used to make certain utterances prominent in relation to other utterances of the sequence. The contour has the same functions in French and Norwegian for these speakers. Our conclusion is that the contour is a flexible resource of the speakers’ repertoires. Originality and significance/implications: This study is a contribution to the scarcely explored area of the prosody-pragmatics interface in speakers with varied linguistic repertoires. Moreover, our approach is emic and inspired by recent trends in the field of multilingualism.

  The current study examines the role of action-depicting gestures in conversational turns by focusing on their semantic characteristics and temporal position in relation to their verbal affiliates (action verbs or more complex verb phrases). The data are video recordings of naturally occurring interactions in multilingual construction sites in Norway. The analysis distinguishes two modes of action depiction: generic depictions, which represent the action as a general type, and contextualized depictions, which in addition include deictic references to the spatio-material environment or iconic representations of the specific manner of action performance. These two modes typically occupy different positions in the turn. Generic depictions are mostly initiated before the verbalization of the action or are synchronized with it, while contextualized depictions mostly start simultaneously with the verbalization and extend beyond the verb phrase or the turn. The pre-positioned and synchronized generic gestures are shown to serve as a practice for facilitating recognition of the verbalized action and may be temporally manipulated in order to pre-empt understanding problems in the face of reduced common linguistic resources. The post-positioned contextualized depictions serve instead to add specifying information about aspects of the action referred to and thereby to complement or supplement the meaning of the verb phrase, securing understanding of action specifics. The study contributes to research on gesture-speech synchrony by demonstrating how variation in the alignment of action depiction and syntax is used to direct the recipient’s attention toward different interactional goals.

  How do participants use multimodal means to display joint understanding after dealing with vocabulary problems in second language interactions? In this article, we investigate the resolution phase of vocabulary-oriented sequences, more specifically word searches, word explanation sequences and vocabulary checks. We argue that understanding is displayed not only by change-of-state tokens, but typically by a more encompassing multimodal gestalt involving facial expression, gestures, and torso movements. A central feature of this gestalt is what we propose to call the change-of-state face, which consists in raised eyebrows and widened eyes and is produced while the head and/or the torso is raised upwards. Typically, this display of a change-of-state is followed by further demonstrations of understanding, such as verbal and gestural repeats. Finally, the solution of the problem is often ‘celebrated’ by means of reciprocal smiling. Not all vocabulary-oriented sequences are equally successful. Facial expression and gesture may also be used to resist and question a proposal of a candidate solution to a word search or a request for an explanation. In this way, multimodal means are crucial to establishing the success of vocabulary-oriented sequences and returning to the main business of the talk.

  The article identifies and describes conversational practices used by persons with dementia and their interlocutors to account for the former’s lack of knowledge in cases where information about their personal experiences is made relevant and expectable at a specific point in a conversation. First, they may seek to normalize the lack of knowledge by claiming that it would be difficult for anyone to know or remember the information in question. Second, they may exceptionalize it by claiming that their cognitive or communicative impairment incidentally and temporarily disables them from accessing the information. Finally, they may justify their failure to provide information by claiming that it is not important, relevant or expectable that they should know. Such accounts dissociate the social character from the forgetfulness and thus constitute an attempt to avoid the loss of face associated with not remembering personal experiences. By specifying these conversational accounting practices, the study thus adds to existing knowledge on how participants handle the social sensitivity of typical dementia symptoms.

  The study investigates code-switching by multilingual persons with dementia in two different speech contexts, picture naming tests and spontaneous conversation. It combines a psycholinguistic perspective on cognitive and linguistic skills with a qualitative conversation analytic approach to understanding the functions and appropriateness of code-switching in social interaction. The analysis shows that code-switching is used as a resource for compensating for word-retrieval problems in both the naming tests and in word search sequences in conversation. Furthermore, it serves to demarcate meta-communicative parentheses in which the participants comment on their process of word retrieval or express frustration about processing problems. Code-switching is generally treated as appropriate and relevant by the participants. In most instances, the speakers switch to a language known by the interlocutor. Only a few instances are treated as inappropriate by not being understandable to the interlocutor or by not adapting to the established language of the conversation. The patterns of code-switching are discussed considering typical symptoms of cognitive decline associated with dementia. Only very few instances may be interpreted as caused by a lack of awareness of the interlocutor’s language background (associated with reduced episodic memory) or a lack of inhibition. Code-switching thereby presents itself primarily as a communicative resource for handling and overcoming another dementia-related symptom, namely anomia.

  In Norwegian, unlike English, negative interrogatives are commonly used as requests for action. In addition, the negation adverb ikke can be placed either before or after a pronominal subject. The study explores pragmatic differences between these two request formats, using everyday conversations from the TV series Big Brother as corpus data. We argue that the difference concerns the contingencies faced by the speaker in gaining compliance. The format with preposed negation (Kan ikke jeg/du X? - ‘Can't I/you X?’) requests confirmation of the assumption that the interlocutor can and will do the requested action and that any obstacles to gaining compliance are merely hypothetical. The format with postposed negation (Kan jeg/du ikke X? - ‘Can I/you not X?’), on the other hand, is used when there are contextually manifest obstacles and the speaker seeks to gain compliance in spite of them. Interrogatives with preposed negation take advantage of premises conducive to having action performed and are used to prevent refusal, while those with postposed negation are employed to combat the obstacles and win compliance.

  This study shows how multi-unit turns may be designed to facilitate incremental establishment of intersubjectivity in cases where understanding is at risk. In addressing L2 speakers, L1 speakers decompose their multi-unit turns into smaller units and present them one at a time, in “installments.” They leave a pause between each installment, thereby inviting the recipient to provide acknowledgments along the way, or alternatively, to initiate repair at an early stage. The practice may be used preemptively, to prevent potential problems of understanding from arising, or in response to an indication of an understanding problem by the recipient.

  The article describes a conversational practice used by L2 speakers in acquiring new technical terms in the course of everyday workplace interaction on a construction site. In the process of searching for a word, the speaker identifies a referent by embodied means and asks the L1 interlocutor what it is called in Norwegian. When the term is provided, it is repeated, often with emphatic prosody, displaying the L2 speaker’s identification of the word and ability to pronounce it. This repeat is treated as a request for confirmation by the L1 speaker, who often also provides further repeats of the word in question. By expanding the word search sequence beyond the identification of the word searched for, the participants show an orientation to the word as a learnable, that is, as something to be memorized and rehearsed in the conversation. The activity of teaching and learning technical vocabulary is thus treated as a relevant activity in and of itself, at the expense of the progression of the workplace task at hand.

  In this article, we explore the naming skills of a bilingual English- Norwegian speaker diagnosed with Primary Progressive Aphasia, in each of his languages across three different speech contexts: confrontation naming, semi-spontaneous narrative (picture description), and conversation, and at two points in time: 12 and 30 months post diagnosis, respectively. The results are discussed in light of two main theories of lexical retrieval in healthy, elderly speakers: the Transmission Deficit Hypothesis and the Inhibitory Deficit Theory. Our data show that, consistent with the participant’s premorbid use of and proficiency in the two languages, his performance in his L2 is lower than in his L1, but this difference diminishes as the disease progresses. This is the case across the three speech contexts; however, the difference is smaller in the narrative task, where his performance is very low in both languages already at the first measurement point. Despite his word finding problems, he is able to take active part in conversation, particularly in his L1 and more so at the first measurement point. In addition to the task effect, we find effects of word class, frequency, and cognateness on his naming skills. His performance seems to support the Transmission Deficit Hypothesis. By combining different tools and methods of analysis, we get a more comprehensive picture of the impact of the dementia on the speaker’s languages from an intra-individual as well as an inter-individual perspective, which may be useful in research as well as in clinical practice.

  We argue that the present challenges in the linguistic integration of adult immigrants in the Nordic societies require radically new thinking about language and learning. The remedy to the current poor linguistic integration of adult immigrants is not found in organising more integration courses or in tweaking the classroom practices. Rather, we propose that the Nordic countries should join forces in developing a Nordic model for adult immigrants’ linguistic support based on ideas of language companionship and language mentoring on the job. Such a model would be one important step towards making the Nordic Region more socially sustainable.

  What happens with language – or the languages – in bilinguals with dementia? What aspects of language are affected, and are both languages affected in a similar way? In The MultiLing Dementia Project we will specifically look at word finding problems in bilinguals with Dementia of the Alzheimer Type (DAT), using different methods: In addition to a test battery consisting of a naming test and various cognitive tests as well as a background questionnaire on functional communication skills, we have elicited oral narratives and collected conversational data. In this talk we will present some results from a pilot study with two male bilingual speakers of American English and Norwegian, both 68 years of age, one neurologically healthy and one with a diagnosis of probable DAT. We will demonstrate how the naming abilities are affected by DAT in the two languages, and what strategies can be used both by the person affected and by his interlocutors to compensate for the problems encountered.
