Areas of responsibility

Camilla is Associate Professor in History. She specialises in 20th and 21st cultural histories, with a longstanding research interest in the history, cultures, and art of menstruation. Her interests include feminist art history and art projects, environmental humanities, medical humanities, feminist Science & Technology Studies, Norwegian/Sámi art histories, and the archetype of the witch.

Camilla is Honorary Lecturer in the School of Medicine and the School of Art History at Aberdeen, and Honorary Research Fellow in Art History at the University of St Andrews.

Camilla holds a Bachelors degree in Art History from the University of Oslo, a Masters degree in Art History and Cultural Studies from the University of Manchester, and a PhD from the University of Manchester.

Camilla's work has appeared in Technology & Culture, Oxford Art Journal, Environment & Society, Enterprise and History, and Leonardo. She has written in Norwegian for Tidsskrift for Norsk Kjønnsforskning and Nytt Norsk Tidsskrift. Her most recent book is Cash Flow: The Businesses of Menstruation (UCL Press, 2022), and she is working on a new book entitled The Painters Are In: A Visual History of Menstruation (McGill Queen's University Press, 2024). Camilla's writing has also appeared in the Wellcome Trust Stories blog series, BBC Radio, Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, The Conversation, and Discard Studies.

In the middle of the 2015 United States presidential election race, artist Sarah Levy made a portrait of candidate Donald Trump with her menstrual blood. The work referenced Trump’s comments about menstruation during a conversation with journalist Meghan Kelly, in which he said that she had ‘blood coming out of her wherever’. While much discussed in the media, the portrait has not received the critical art historical attention it deserves. This paper considers the artistic, cultural, political and aesthetic inspiration of the creation of the menstrual artwork ‘Whatever’ (Bloody Trump), the techniques and materiality of the portrait, and its subsequent reception in public, art institutional and media discourse. Drawing on interviews with the artist and critical visual analysis in the tradition of feminist art history, this paper argues that ‘Whatever’ (Bloody Trump) should be understood as an important artwork that aesthetically interprets and recalls the white supremacist politics and strong menstrual taboos of the Trump era.

What is needed to end period poverty and ensure that everyone who menstruates experiences affordable, dignified and stigma-free periods? Research shows that periods are an everyday stressor for many, made worse by the costs, pain and unpredictability of periods. Accessing affordable period products is not easy for all, in fact almost a quarter of people who menstruate who responded to a UK survey last year said they struggle to pay for period products. The cost of period products is especially challenging to manage for people living in poverty and who are living as refugees or asylum seekers. Everyone benefits when people who menstruate do not suffer from embarrassment and shame, and can access period products whenever needed. So what can academics, campaigners and practitioners doing to shine a light on period poverty? And what can we all do end a culture of period stigma and silence? In this seminar, our speakers will discuss their activism and research with and for people affected by period poverty.
