The Latin American University of Science and Technology (ULACIT) is a private university located in Costa Rica’s capital city, San José.  The university is ranked high in Latin American and has approximately 4000 students, many of these are international. The university offers a wide variety of study programs, with many of these being offered in English.

Costa Rica is a small country in Central America with 5 million inhabitants.  Costa Rica was founded in 1949, becoming the first country in the world to abolish the military and the country is a well-functioning democracy that spends a lot of resources on education, healthcare, and environmental protection.

The capital San José is in located in the middle of the country and has nearly 300, 000 inhabitants.  It is a charming and sometimes chaotic town, which is an excellent starting point for trips to the rest of the country.

Opptakskrav

You must have an active study right for a program at UiA and have completed a minimum of 60 ECTS to go on exchange.  

Students that wish to take courses in Spanish must document a minimum of B2 level in Spanish.
Some individual courses require C1 in the 'The European Framework of Reference for Languages'

Studiepoeng og emner

UiA must take 15 ULACIT credits within one ‘quarter’.  That is equivalent to 5 courses.  Business Administration and International Relations are bilingual degrees, and all teaching is held in both English and Spanish. It is possible to combine courses in Spanish and English or focus on just one language. 

It is also possible to take all courses in Spanish.

If you want to study in Costa Rica for an entire year, you must take three 'quarters', starting in September and finishing in August. It is then possible to take 10 credits each 'quarter', which will reduce your school-related stress.

UiA has a total of 4 free study places to ULACIT a year that are divided between fall and spring semester.  In addition, there are tuition paying places available.  The tuition fee is approximately $3500 for one semester. (15 weeks).  Tuition free study places grants exemption from paying tuition fees but one must cover the following mandatory fees:  

  • Semester fee: $550
  • Official transcript $88

Bolig

ULACIT offers students the opportunity to live with a host family which costs $190 a week, which includes all meals, wireless internet, and laundry services.  It is also possible to rent housing on the private market.  If you choose this option, we recommend that you travel prior to semester start and view the housing in person.  Public transportation is reasonable but there is often a lot of traffic and can be delayed. Therefore, it is recommended that you live close by campus.

Tilleggsinformasjon

  • The school year is divided into three quarters.  The first quarter is from the second week in September until the third week in December. The second quarter is from the second week in January until the third week in April.  The third quarter is from second week in May until the third week in August.  Each quarter lasts 15 weeks.  The school also oggers an intensive Spanish language course, volunteer work and a vast social program with courses, student-driven organizations and trips.
  • Students that wish to take courses in Spanish can apply for a stipend from Lånekassen. The course must be at least 15 hours a week over 4 weeks.
