Admission requirements

Higher Education Entrance Qualification.

Knowledge of English language equivalent to English as main subject in upper secondary school is recommended as previous knowledge.

General description and profile

The programme aims to provide a broad knowledge of English language, literature and culture with a survey of American and British literature and culture both before and after 1900 and courses on English grammar, phonetics and phonology, and academic writing in English. The students will work with various text genres in order to train their skills in analysing literary/cultural and linguistic issues. The programme aims to train the students' written and oral skills.

Teaching methods

Through lectures, seminars and group work, students improve their English skills and refine their analytical capabilities, and through self-study, they improve their ability to work independently. Students are expected to participate actively, to give oral presentations and to submit written work, according to prior agreement with the course instructor. Obligatory attendance at seminars.

Assessment methods

The study program has a variety of forms of assessment, both compulsory assignments during the semester and exams after the course is completed. See separate course descriptions for further information.

Internationalization

English is an international subject, and international and intercultural topics are addressed in the programme.

The faculty has a longstanding agreement with the Norwegian Study Centre in York, England. An optional stay in York is typically included in the programme in the spring. Further information will be given in due course.

Students can apply for an internal transfer to the Bachelor's Programme, and then study the entire programme in English, or spend one or two semesters at a university in English-speaking countries with which the University of Agder has an exchange agreement.

Occupational profiles / further studies

The one-year programme in English can be part of a study course leading to teaching certification and employment opportunities in the Norwegian school system. Please note course and programme requirements for acceptance to PPU-A teacher training in general subjects at the University of Agder. Graduates may also find employment in mass media and digital media, in the culture sector, in public relations, in tourism, in executive positions in the public and private sectors, in publishing, or in the international and intercultural sector.

Evaluation

Student evaluations are carried out annually in the Study Programme Advisory Committee in accordance with the quality system for education chapter 4.2.

Other information

The University of Agder (UiA) encourages increased use of digital tools in its study programmes. The aim is to use new forms of communication and to explore new methods of teaching and academic supervision. Students at UiA use computers in their daily academic work. A transition to digital examinations is an important part of this process. It is a requirement that all students at UiA have their own portable computer (`laptop') for use in teaching and examinations, see Examination Regulations, University of Agder, §12d.
