Innhold

This course is interdisciplinary and combines biology, electronics, control and mechanics in order to design therapeutic, assistive and diagnostic devices that can potentially be used to compensate and eventually replace human biomechanical functions. This course will widen the perspective of the students and increase their creativity to better produce engineering-inspired products that can interact with human muscle, skeleton and nervous systems to better serve the human beings.

  • Introduction to biomechatronics (Motivation and highlights of biomechatronic technologies)
  • Human-machine interaction, haptic interface
  • Biomechanics: kinematics and dynamics
  • Actuators: Electro, hydraulic and pneumatic
  • Feedback and Control Systems
  • Active and passive prosthetic limbs, Exoskeletons, Exomusculatures
  • Biomechatronic devices (Visual prostheses, hearing aids, GPS-based systems, brain-machine interfaces)
  • Biocompatibility and biocompatible materials in biomechatronics
  • Physical therapy and Rehabilitation

Læringsutbytte

On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • explain and summarise the motivation, state-of-the-art, ethical issues and future challenges in biomechatronics
  • analyze human as a biomechanical system
  • understand the critical elements of biomechatronics and their interaction with biological systems
  • analyse, evaluate and compare the design and construction of biomechatronic technologies
  • select and apply appropriate dynamic models and computational tools to simulate and analyse biomechatronic systems
  • design simple biomechatronic systems using appropriate hardware and instrumentation
  • produce a technical report incorporating details of designs, models, simulations and outcomes
  • present a technical report on an interdisciplinary subject
