Innhold

The course aims to train students to understand the national economies of states and regions with a growing influence in the global economy and world politics. The course has three main theoretical and methodological components: systematic assessment of resources for national economic growth; the role of institutions for sustainable economic development and welfare distribution; and government policies for growth with equity. The following issues will be covered under each component:

  • Resources for economic growth: Natural and human, including education; Energy, including renewables; Social and cultural capital; Dutch disease and theories on resource curse avoidance; Growth models

  • The role of institutions: Economic, political, judicial; Democratic versus authoritarian political systems; The importance of rule of law; Corruption

  • Government policies and their impacts on business, growth, and environmental and social sustainability; Monetary and fiscal policies; Trade policies and foreign relations; Labor markets and social policies

Læringsutbytte

On successful completion of the course the student should be able to

  • understand the complexity of economic development and the need for an interdisciplinary approach for academic analyses and policy making in emerging economies

  • identify and quantify sources of national economic growth and preconditions for sustainable economic development

  • understand the role of institutions, including corrupt practices, on business operation and economic development

  • realize similarities and differences among emerging markets

  • recognize national and global reasons behind economic turmoil and crises

  • understand challenges and opportunities facing multinational enterprises operating in emerging economies

Presentation of the term paper. More information will be given in Canvas at the start of the semester.

Undervisnings- og læringsformer

Lectures, class discussions, case presentations and a term paper. Estimated workload is about 200 hours.
