Accessibility

The Natural History Museum is universally designed according to current standards. The museum was founded in 1828, but the buildings have recently been renovated (spring 2023).

Main entrance

  • The main entrance to the museum is located on the ground floor.
  • The entrance has a wheelchair ramp with a small incline.
  • The doors have automatic openers.

Elevator

  • There is an elevator between the ground floor and first floor

Floor plan

  • The main exhibition is located on the ground floor.
  • The current exhibition and the Cacti house are on the first floor.
  • There is an elevator between the ground floor and first floor.
  • There is a wheelchair ramp with a gentle slope between the elevator and the current exhibition.
  • There is a wheelchair ramp with a gentle slope between the current exhibition and the Cacti house.
  • The doors have automatic openers.

Parking

  • The museum has two disabled parking spaces.
  • Public parking costs 14 NOK per day.
  • Parking is paid at the machine or through a parking app.
  • Entrance to the parking area is from Gimleveien.
  • It is not allowed to drive in the botanical garden.
  • Parking on the grass close to the botanical garden (at Bernt Holms vei) is not allowed.

HC-toilett

  • Toilets are located on the first floor.
  • The museum has an HC-toilet with a changing table.
  • The HC-toilet does not have an automatic door opener.
  • The Museum has four unisex toilets.
  • Toilets are free for museum visitors, others pay 10 NOK.

Hearing

  • There is no induction loop.
  • Some elements in the exhibits have sound. These are interpreted for the hearing-impaired on corresponding posters.

Sight

  • Tactile guidance system from the main entrance to the reception, up stairs, and wheelchair ramps.
  • No tactile guidance systems in the exhibits.
  • Tactile signs at the restroom.
  • Some elements in the exhibits include sound.
  • Several information screens and exhibition screens can magnify text and images.

Animals

  • Guide and service dogs are allowed. Other animals are not allowed. 
  • Dogs must be kept on a leash in the botanical garden. Please clean up after your dog and dispose of the waste in the nearest trash bin. There are several trash bins in the area.

Goods delivery

  •  A gate prevents traffic from the parking lot to the operational area.
  • During goods deliveries and similar activities, the gate can be opened. Please call the reception (+47 38 14 24 70) to open the gate. The number is also displayed on the gate.

    Botanisk hage

    • Accessible for wheelchair users.

    Ljosland fjellhage

    • Accessible for wheelchair users - some slopes are a bit steep, be careful.
