Peonies have a long tradition as both medicinal and ornamental plants, representing old garden culture.

In Norway, there are about 60 varieties of peonies with a significant cultivation history. This knowledge is based on old garden literature and plant lists from plant nurseries dating back to the interwar period. However, many of the peony varieties disappeared from Norway as other garden plants became more popular.

Fortunately, some of these old peony varieties survived in other countries. In collaboration with the Norwegian Genetic Resource Centre, we have reintroduced 28 of the varieties that were in circulation in the early 1900s, from the Czech Republic. These are presented in the peony bed, just above the perennial bed in the old park.

Of the other varieties, we have found 14 of them remaining in old gardens in Southern Norway, located south of the Southern Rose Garden. The peony varieties are included in our clone archive. The purpose of the clone archives is to preserve genetic resources for the future.
