In collaboration with the Norwegian Genetic Resource Centre and the Botanical Garden, University of Bergen, old dahlia varieties in Norway have been mapped and collected from across the country.
Dahlias for sale in Norway were first mentioned by market gardener Gundersen in Kristiansand in 1840, and Grimstadfrø had early offers of dahlia seeds, at least from 1916.
Today, there are approximately 20,000 varieties of dahlias, making it quite a puzzle to find the correct names.
Dahlias continually form new tubers. The tubers must be dug up every autumn, stored frost-free, and then planted out the following spring.
The dahlia's homeland is Mexico.
