Conifers arboretum

In the botanical garden, we have a special collection of various coniferous trees, called the conifer arboretum.

The arboretum was established in 1969 by county forester Johan Fredrik Kilander in consultation with the director of the Gothenburg Botanical Garden, Per Werndelbo.

This marked the beginning of the botanical garden in Kristiansand. Today, the collection includes around 40 different species of coniferous trees.

The trees form a continuous belt along Bernt Holms vei.

This tree is known as "apeskrekk" in Norwegian (directly translated it means "monkey horror"), with the scaly bark being the origin of its name. In English it is calles "monkey puzzle tree" or "monkey tail tree". Photo: ©Naturmuseum og Botanisk Hage, UIA/ Lisbeth Breland
