FYSE

FYSE (First Year Study Environment) is a mentor program at the Faculty of Engineering and Science at the University of Agder. All new bachelor’s students are offered a mentor – an experienced student who guides a group of new students through their first semester. As a new student, you will be contacted by your mentor via email before the start of the semester.

Mandatory session

This is where you will meet your fellow students and lecturer/ student adviser. There is no teaching on this day, but rather an introductory session where we get to know each other and learn what to expect for the semester ahead.

Attendance is mandatory.

Buddy programme

UiA has a great buddy programme for new students! You will automatically become a member of a buddy group and will be contacted by a buddy already the weekend before semester start. This way, you know that someone will be there to greet you when you arrive at Campus Grimstad on that day.

The rest of the first week

 Tuesday 13 August 

Drop-in course in English for new students: become familiar with the systems and software you’ll need as a student.

Course for new students: Digital tools (drop-in)

The first week, new students gather on Tuesday for information about the academic orientation week. During this session, you’ll learn about your studies and student life, as well as what’s happening throughout the rest of the first week. You’ll be divided into groups and meet your FYSE mentor. These groups will continue to meet regularly throughout the first semester, and together with your fellow students, you’ll find effective ways to study. The time and location for these gatherings will be announced in the study timetable.

 Academic orientation week

During the first week, there are planned academic and social events during daytime on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. These include lectures, group projects, and more. Additional information will be provided during Tuesday’s meeting. All times and locations are announced in the study timetable.

Important information about this study programme

HSE-course

As a student in this program, you must complete a mandatory course in health, safety, and environment (HSE) with course code ORG001. This course consists of two parts: a digital theoretical component and a practical component on campus, which includes hands-on training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and fire drills. Successfully passing this course is essential to receive your degree certificate.

As a student you are required to have your own PC or Mac. Office 365 is available for all students at UiA.
