Tuition fees for international students

International students with citizenship from outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland must pay tuition fees to take a bachelor's or master's degree at UiA.

Students who have started their study programme before the autumn semester 2023 will not be required to pay tuition fees.

  • See the current rates for full degree study programmes
  • Current rates for all study programmes, including Norwegian taught study programmes, can be found by switching to the Norwegian version of the page
  • The University of Agder does not offer any scholarships for 2024/2025

Payment details

Students with citizenship from outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland must send two different payments to the University of Agder:

  1. Tuition Fee: You will receive a link to flywire and instructions on how to pay the tuition fee by email after you accept your offer to study at UiA.
  2. Deposit for living costs: You will receive bank account details for international money transfer to the UiA deposit account by email after you accept your offer to study at UiA.

It will not be possible to pay in installments.

If you are a student with citizenship from outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland, and you did not receive the payment information, please contact UiA at admission@uia.no.

The tuition fee will be exchanged to NOK through Flywire.

We recommend that the deposit is also paid in NOK to ensure that the amount paid is correct. If you pay in a currency other than NOK, the bank will convert it. However, fluctuations in exchange rates may mean that the amount we receive is not sufficient. We recommend paying a little extra in relation to the converted amount. You will get the excess back when we transfer the deposit.

Exemptions from paying tuition fees

Some applicants can apply for an exemption from paying tuition fees based on residence in Norway or other close connections to Norway.

See if you meet the criteria for exemptions from paying tuition fees, and how to document the basis for exemption

Deposit for living costs

For the academic year 2024/2025 the cost of living is set to 151 690 NOK
(the amount is updated every year in March)

Study permit

When applying for your Study Permit, you must document your ability to finance your living costs in Norway for a whole academic year.

Students without a Norwegian bank account in their own name need to transfer a deposit for living costs to the University of Agder's bank account to receive the required documentation.

Visit UDI (the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration) for more information on what documents you need to up upload when applying for study permit to Norway

Once the deposit has been registered in UiA's account, you will receive a Confirmation Letter to be uploaded to your Study Permit Application.

Reimbursement of deposit

Once you open a Norwegian Bank Account, your deposit can be transferred back to you.

Follow these steps to get your deposit back:

  1. Once you have arrived in Norway you have to register at the local Police Station. UiA will book this appointment for you.
  2. After the Police Appointment, you will receive a National ID or D-number by post.
  3. With this number you can open a personal bank account in a Norwegian bank of your choice. Remember to bring your passport and Study Permit when opening your account.
  4. When you have activated your new account, you must bring your passport and a copy of your Bank Account Contract to Global Lounge at UiA.
  5. Any deposit transfer amount sent to UiA (minus any bank charges) will then be transferred to your Norwegian bank account.

It will take some time to get the deposit back after arrival, so please make sure to have access to sufficient funds for the first few months. Generally cash is not used in Norway, so bring Bank Cards. However, if you bring cash, please remember to only bring Norwegian kroner (NOK) as currency. Other currencies are not accepted. Visa and Mastercard is widely accepted. Check with your bank if your card is valid in Norway.

Please note that when you apply to renew your study permit, you will have to document your ability to finance your cost of living for the following year. Read more at the UDI webpage.

Withdrawing from studies

In case your study permit is declined, or you choose to withdraw from your studies before 1 September, you can fill in an application form in order to get your payments refunded.

The university will refund the tuition fee and the funds for your living expenses to the bank account specified in the form. Please note that all refunds will be made in NOK. This means that the amount you receive will be subject to the exchange rates between NOK and your country’s currency, in addition to any fees your bank charges for international transfers.
