Entrance exam for the Master in Popular Music

Format

The audition lasts for 30 minutes. Applicants who pass the music performance presentation proceeds to an interview. The interview lasts for about 15 minutes. International applicants will have a live audition using Zoom Video Conference tool. 

Specialisation: Music Performance Popular Music/World Music

During the audition, the applicant is to perform a 15 minutes selection of their full repertoire. The applicant can themselves decide what to perform during the audition. The level of difficulty of the audition programme should correspond to a final examination programme for a Bachelor’s degree or similar. The selected repertoire should reflect the intended specialisation-area.

Specialisation: Electronic Music

During the audition, the applicant is to perform a 15 minutes selection of their full repertoire, either live, through playback from a computer or a combination of both. The applicant can themselves decide what to perform during the audition. The level of difficulty of the audition programme should correspond to a final examination programme for a Bachelor’s degree or similar. The selected repertoire should reflect the intended specialisation-area. The applicant must send a digital folder with no more than 10 works including a description of the applicant’s role in producing them (lyrics, arrangements, producer, etc). The folder can include links, sound-files, text-documents, sheet-music, etc. The deadline for sending the folder is February 1st. The specialisation-area will be in focus during the interview.

Specialisation: Songwriting

During the audition, the applicant is to perform a 15 minutes programme of their own choice. The level of difficulty of the audition programme should correspond to a final examination programme for a Bachelor’s degree or similar. The selected repertoire should reflect the intended specialisation-area. The specialisation-area will be in focus during the interview. The applicant must send a digital folder with no more than 10 works including a description of the applicant’s role in producing them (lyrics, arrangements, producer, etc.). The folder can include links, sound-files, text-documents, sheet-music, etc. The deadline for sending the folder is 1st. of February. The specialisation-area will be in focus during the interview. Most of the selected repertoire should be performed with a band.

Sheet music

The applicant must bring three copies of the sheet music they perform during the audition.

Accompaniment

The applicant must organise for the accompaniment themselves, if needed.

Equipment

The Department of Popular Music offers the applicant to make use of their standard equipment. Additionally, the applicant can bring their own if needed. We set aside 30 minutes for rigging and similar preparations in the audition-room prior to the audition itself. When the audition is done, the applicant and the band receive 5 minutes to clear the stage.

Attachments to the application for music related assessment, audition and interview

The following attachments must be sent before the 15 January.

  • A proposal for the specialisation-topic (2–3 pages, word or pdf-format) where the title should reflect the specialisation-topic. Specialisation areas include: Music mediation activities; interpretation studies; studies regarding a composer, performer or repertoire; or music technology.
  • A motivation-letter (one page, word or pdf-format).
  • For applicants to the specialisation Songwriting and Electronic Music: a digital folder with no more than 10 works. 

All attachments must be typed using a computer.
