Oral exams

Oral exams are either conducted on campus with a course teacher and examiner present, or digitally. You may be asked to prepare a presentation, or engage in a dialogue with the course teacher and examiner on a topic of your choice or one that is randomly assigned.

How to prepare for the exam

Computer requirements

All students must have their own laptop for use in teaching and examinations. Familiarise yourself with UiA's computer requirements.

Make sure that you have installed all the latest updates on your computer before the examination day.

Internet connection

Check that the internet is working properly. Contact your internet provider if you cannot figure out the problem yourself.

A backup solution could be to connect via your mobile phone. It is advisable to test this in advance to avoid an unnecessary stress factor on the actual exam day.

Test your username and password

Use your ordinary UiA username and password to log on to your exam. Make sure that you have a valid password.

Remember that the password must be renewed regularly, so make sure it is valid. You will receive a notification to your student email when the password is about to expire, so check this before the exam period begins.

Check also whether your password works on the morning of the exam by logging into Canvas. Contact UiA Help on phone 38 14 10 00 if it does not work.

Test sound and video

Set up a meeting in Zoom in advance with a friend or family. Familiarise yourself with the various settings for microphone, speaker, camera and background.

Download the Zoom app on your mobile in advance as a backup solution, and test how it works with a meeting.

If you experience poor video quality, it may be that you do not have a good enough upload speed. Feel free to use Speedtest.net and check your upload speed. "Upload" should not be below 1.5 Mpbs.

On the examination day

Getting ready

The exam schedule and link to the exam in Zoom can be found in Canvas.

We use the Waiting Room function in Zoom, which means that you wait in the digital waiting room until it is your turn and the sensor lets you in. You can therefore log in 10-15 minutes before, to ensure that you get in.

You present valid photo identification (student ID, driver's license, bank card, or passport) before the exam starts. The student ID app or digital driver's license will not be accepted.

Recording the exam is not allowed.

If something goes wrong

Have your mobile phone with you, as important messages to students are often sent as text messages. You can also receive phone calls if you need assistance with sign-in or other problems.

There will be a link to chat available in Inspera which you can use to ask for help.

If you experience loss of the internet connection during the examination, you can try to connect to the mobile network. Be aware that this may incur additional expenses. If something goes wrong with your computer during the oral exam, you can try switching to the Zoom app on your mobile.
