Appeal after the exam

If you think your grade seems to be incorrect, it is possible to file an appeal against the grade.

  • You can appeal all exams that are verifiable.
  • It is not possible to appeal an oral or practical exam.
  • It is advisable to first request an explanation for the grade.
  • The new result will apply and cannot be appealed.

Explanation of grade

Before requesting an explanation for your grade, it is recommended that you read through the grading guidelines that are posted on Canvas when the grading is complete.

You must request an explanation within one week after the grade is announced in Studentweb.

We recommend that you request an explanation before deciding whether to appeal the grade.

How to request an explanation

  • Log in to Studentweb.
  • From the drop-down menu "More", select "Explanations and appeals".
  • Click on the relevant course and press "Send" to request an explanation. The button disappears if the deadline for requesting an explanation has passed (one week after the announcement of the grade).

The explanation will be available in Inspera under "Archive" - course name - "See more details" within two to three weeks. You will also receive an email when it is ready.

Exams with alternative ways to receive explanations

Assignments that have an adjusting oral examination afterwards. The explanation is typically given in conjunction with the oral examination.

Pure multiple-choice exams. The point distribution will normally be posted on Canvas when the grading is ready.

For assignments submitted in Canvas. You must send an email directly to the course instructor/examiner.

Oral or practical exams. The request for an explanation must be made immediately to the course instructor/examiner after the grade is announced.

Complaint about grade on exam

The appeal must submitted through Studentweb.

The deadline for appeals is three weeks from the grade being announced on Studentweb.

If you have requested an explanation for the grade or appealed over formal errors, the appeal deadline starts from the moment you have received the explanation or when the appeal over formal errors has been resolved.

The result after the appeal becomes the current result. You may end up with a better, worse or the same result. The deadline for grading is three weeks from the end of the appeal deadline, which allows for a normal processing time of approximately six weeks.

Complaint about grade on group exam

If you appeal the grade you have received on a group exam, you are only appealing on your behalf. Each member of the group must submit their own appeal.

If the grade is changed after the appeal, the new grade only applies to the group members who have appealed.

Complaint about grade on portfolio exam

On a portfolio exam, you receive a collective grade for all the submissions, elements or exams that you have done in the portfolio. If you appeal a portfolio exam, all the portfolio elements will be re-evaluated.

Complaint about grade on oral or practical exam

You cannot appeal the grade you receive on oral exams, practical exams, concerts or exhibitions: exams we call non-verifiable exams. These are exams where the appeals commission is not present during your performance and therefore they do not have the possibility to make an evaluation of your exam performance.

Complaint about procedural error with exam

If you believe that errors have been made during the exam that have had an impact on your performance or grading, you can make a complaint about formal errors. You can complain about formal errors in all types of exams: oral, written, practical and internships.

Formal errors refer to errors that have been made in the conduct of the exam or in the grading process, such as errors in the exam papers or conditions in the exam room.

If errors have been made that may have affected your performance during the exam or its evaluation, the grading decision should be overturned. If the error is corrected by re-grading, the exam paper should be re-graded. If the error cannot be corrected by re-grading, the exam should be retaken.
