Once you have received a letter of admission from the host institution, you must apply for a visa. The visa process can take up to eight weeks, even longer during the period of June - August and November - January. Visa applications to South Africa must be submitted in person at the embassy in Oslo, and filled in on site.

Japan
To get a student visa to Japan, you will need the Certificate of Eligibility (COE) issued by the Japanese University. This document is provided during admission.
Once you have received this document, you can apply for a visa. Here you will find more information about what you need for your application.

China
When entering China, you must have a so-called "F visa". The price is currently 500 NOK. Here you will find the application form for visas. You must have an admission letter from your institution in order to apply.

South Korea
Anyone studying in South Korea must have a valid visa. The application for a visa must be sent to the South Korean Embassy, you must also contact them to receive the application form. You must have the following documentation:
- Admission letter from the university.
- Proof that you can fund your studies. A temporary statement from Lånekassen is sufficient.
- Confirmation that there is an exchange agreement between UiA and the relevant university in South Korea. Contact the international office about this.
Applications for visas cost approx. NOK. 500.

Taiwan
You must have a visa to study in Taiwan.
To obtain a visa, you must first have an admission letter from the Taiwanese university you are exchanging to.

Europa
You do not need a visa to study in Europe as long as you are a Norwegian citizen. The exception is the United Kingdom:
From 1 January 2021, students travelling to the UK and staying in the country for more than six months must apply for a student visa on gov.uk before departure. Students who are going to stay in the UK for less than six months will be considered visitors and do not need to apply for a visa. Visitors must leave the UK within the six-month period.
In 2021, student visas cost £348. You will also have to pay for a 'healthcare surcharge' which costs £470 per year. This must be paid before the application for a visa can be submitted. Norwegian citizens with a biometric passport can upload the necessary documents online and be notified by e-mail when a visa has been granted. It may take up to three weeks to get an answer.
If you have other citizenship, we recommend that you contact the embassy.
North-America
Canada
- Should you be in Canada 6 months or more: You must apply for a student visa and at the same time pay for biometrics ($85) in addition to the application fee. You will then receive a letter with instructions to submit biometrics. Biometrics submission might be held in Oslo a couple of days a month, otherwise it will be in Stockholm. For more information about times, dates and how to proceed, see here. To apply for a student visa, you need the admission letter from your Canadian institution. Therefore, you cannot submit biometrics in advance. The reason for this is that the biometrics are logged directly into the application process.
- Should you be in Canada 6 months or less: You do not need to apply for a student visa. The only thing to apply for is eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization).
USA
If you are going to study in the United States, you must have a student visa.
You will receive an I-20 form from the U.S. Host University. This must be used in the visa application itself. About SEVIS:
When you are accepted by the U.S. university you plan to attend, you will be enrolled in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). You must pay the SEVIS I-901 Fee. The U.S. university will provide you with a Form I-20 to present to the consular officer when you attend your visa interview.
As soon as you receive I-20, go to the U.S. Embassy's website and follow the instructions there.

Oceania
Australia
- You must apply for a student visa. You can only do this AFTER you have been admitted to the university you are going to travel to.
- The processing time is usually between 5 and 10 working days and it costs approx. AUD 550 to apply.
ANSA is a Norwegian organisation for Norwegian students abroad. They primarily assist students who take an entire degree abroad, but the visa information on their website is also relevant for those who are going on exchange. On the ANSA website you will find more information about the entire visa process.
NB: Some students have to undergo an additional health check. This costs extra (approx. 2-3000 NKR) and can only be done by selected doctors (so-called Panel Physicians) in Oslo or Bergen. The reason someone has to take this extra check is that, for example, you have to take it. have holidayed in high-risk countries (e.g. Africa, some countries in Asia and South America) over the past 5 years or being a citizen of a country other than Norway. New Zealand
- You must apply for a student visa. You can only do this AFTER you have been admitted to the university you are going to travel to.
- The processing time is about two weeks. You can download your visa application on the Immigration New Zealand website. Fill out the application, attach an approved photo of yourself as well as "Preliminary statement of right to support"
- and pay the application fee (approx. NOK 1500). You might be asked to attach your passport along with your visa application. In that case, it is recommended to use courier services such as DHL, TNT or others.
NB: If you have been travelling for 3 months or more in the last 5 years and will be at NZ for 1 year, you will most likely need to have an extra health check. More information about health checks in New Zealand.
