Course contents

This course focuses on the actor and the ensemble. A basic overview of the practitioner’s role in different theatre traditions such as drama, epic theatre, physical theatre, performance art, dance theatre, post-dramatic theatre or documentary theatre. Through practice the students are taught about the theory of the practitioner, fiction, theatricality and the performative. Drawing inspiration from current shows and texts, the students are asked to create dramatization of various styles and genres. Play, improvisation and interaction are central themes. Students will also gain experience from performing to an audience, and from reflecting on aspects of the relationship between the actor/ensemble and the audience member/audience.

Learning outcomes

After course completion the candidate must:

• have developed an understanding of basic performance methods and terminology and be able to apply these in collaboration with others.

• have developed an understanding of a variety of theatre traditions and have awareness of how these represent different views of the practitioners.

• be able to utilise play and improvisation as a creative element in theatre production.

• be able to plan, complete and evaluate a theatre collaboration which has either an idea, theme or text as a starting point.

• have a basic understanding of the different aspects of a theatre production.

• be experienced in group processes, ensemble work and spatial interaction.

Teaching methods

Course work will be predominantly group-based and will encompass both theory and practice.

The schedule will, where possible, ensure that the different sections of the course such as practical work, lectures, seminars and conferences are completed in units. The course comprises class and workshops, lectures, seminars, group projects, conferences, rehearsals and independent practice.

Some classes in select subject matters are mandatory. These will be highlighted on Canvas at the start of the semester.
Expected workload is 27 hours per study point

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

A practical group examination: Practice over the course of three days resulting in a performance and group discussion. Individual assessment.

Evaluation method: Graded by letters
