Course contents

The course provides an in-depth study in key theories and recent national and international research on democracy and democratic understanding aimed at teaching social studies in steps 5-10 in elementary school. The course provides deeper understanding of key concepts related to democracy and citizenship, and emphasis is placed on critical social understanding. It focuses on democracy development in Norway and Europe in modern times and democratic participation among children and young people.

The course in practice

For primary school teacher education students:

Five of the practice days during this period are organized as a school takeover. Students will work with a professional development work during the practical period. This development work will also be integrated into campus teaching in the form of guidance, planning, collaboration and presentation seminars. Democratic education in schools, student democracy, analysis of planning and new digital forms of participation are central. Working methods that promote critical thinking and democratic participation will be central to the practice period. Emphasis will also be placed on work with assessment methods in the subject and reflection on social science plans during the practical period.

For other students:

Students will work with a professional development work during. Learning outcomes

Knowledge

After completing the course, the student will:

  • have advanced knowledge of democracy theories and views of democracy

  • have thorough knowledge of key concepts related to democracy and citizenship

  • have advanced knowledge of democracy in Norway and Europe in modern times

  • have in-depth knowledge of democracy education in schools and new digital forms of participation

  • have in-depth knowledge of recent national and international democratic research

  • have advanced knowledge about the role the information systems has in regards of the development of new forms of participation in organizations and in society.

Skills

After completing the course, the student will:

  • be able to analyze and critically relate to different democracy theories and views of democracy

  • be able to analyze research on democracy and citizenship and apply this in teaching work

  • be able to lead, adapt and carry out development work aimed at steps 5-10in elementary school

  • be able to analyze and interpret curricula in social studies and other plans with a view to democratic education and democratic understanding

  • be able to discuss and reflect on ethical issues related to the use of information systems.

General competence

After completing the course, the student will:

  • be able to apply and develop their knowledge in meeting with students in teaching situations

  • be able to contribute to innovative thinking about democracy and participation among children and young people.

Examination requirements

Work requirements and practice must be passed in order to take the exam. Detailed description of work requirements will be given in the semester plan through the University's learning platform.

Primary school students must have:

  • Passed practice.

  • Approved work requirements described in the semester plan

  • Approved compulsory lectures as described in the semester plan with a minimum of 70% class attendance

 

Other students must have:

  • Passed academic didactic work of equivalent scope as practice.

  • Approved work requirements described in the semester plan

  • Approved compulsory lecture attendance, as described in the semester plan

Teaching methods

The teaching will be characterized by the variation between lectures, counseling and seminars with a touch of conversation, reflection, group work, exercise, presentations, excursion etc. It is included 25 days practice. The course has an expected workload of about 400 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual portfolio assessment that counts 100%. Graded grade. Further information on what is included in the portfolio will be informed through the University Learning Platform.
