Course contents

The course will focus on understanding society from the local to the global level. Central themes are democracy, democratic citizenship and participation. The course will provide an introduction to social science theory and research methods with special attention to practical application of these. The course also provides insight on economic and cultural aspects of society, locally and nationally. Sociological themes such as socialization and identity development, youth and children¿s rights and their participation in societal life are subjects in this course.

Critical thinking has an important role in this course and students will be presented with differing perspectives from several fields of study. Students will be presented with didactical training that seeks to stimulate critical reflection and understanding of diversity and equality. In the course, students will also have the opportunity to gain knowledge on youth and their digital life and challenges related to new digital forms of learning will be discussed.

The course in practice

The central themes will be used to make didactical reflections through the whole course. Discussions and practical training will be applied to develop understanding the nature of the field of study and to apply knowledge in a way that promotes children and youths attitude building, engagement and learning. In the practice period the students will work with planning didactically relevant teaching with special emphasis on fundamental skills and in practicing varying teaching methods.

Knowledge

After completing the course, the student will:

  • have a deep knowledge of international politics and economics

  • have in-depth knowledge of key actors, power relations and processes in the international community

  • have in-depth knowledge of international conflicts and terrorism in the past and present

  • have a deep knowledge of developments in the global world economy and political, cultural, environmental and social consequences of this, also in an indigenous peoples perspective

  • have thorough knowledge of scientific theories and methods in the subject

  • have thorough knowledge of relevant research and development work in the field of study

  • have thorough knowledge of key subject didactic methods and theories.

Skills

After completing the course, the student will:

  • be able to apply professional knowledge and results from research and development work

  • be able to work independently with academic questions and analyze professional issues based on the facts and theories of the subject area

  • critically analyze societal issues and stimulate this in the education

  • be able to master and evaluate the use of professional aids and digitize expressions in social studies

  • be able to adapt the teaching to the single life by facilitating varied and differentiated learning activities

  • be able to make the students aware of the choice of learning strategies

  • could use to guide students in key social science methods

  • able to lead learning processes for the diversity of the student group and progression in the subject.

General competence

After completing the course, the student will:

  • be able to critically reflect on societal issues

  • be able to update professionally and reflect on own practice

  • be able to work independently and with others to identify, analyze and solve problems related to student learning and development in social science.

Examination requirements

Work assignments and practice must be passed in order to take the exam. The course is entitled to 70% attendance in order to take the exam. Detailed description of work assignments will be provided through Canvas.

Primary school students must have: Passed practice. Other students must have: Passed academic didactic work of equivalent scope as practice.

Teaching methods

The teaching will be characterized by the variation between lectures and seminars with touches of conversation, reflection, group work, exercises, presentations, excursions, etc. 3 weeks of practice practice with supervision is included in the course. There are 15 days practice for elementary school students. Other students must perform a subject didactic work of equivalent scope that must be passed. The course is expected to have a workload of about 400 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

4-hour written school exam + oral exam, each counting 50% of the grade.
