Teaching language

This course is taught in English, but the exam can be submitted in English or Norwegian  

Recommended prerequisites

Students should have knowledge of basic sociological theory corresponding to SV-133 Introduction to sociology.

Course contents

The purpose of the course is to give students an introduction to recent sociological theories and provide them with the knowledge as to how these theories can be applied to topics such as individuals' actions, interaction and communication, and the distribution wealth and power in societies.

Of particular interest are theories that deal with:

  • the relationship between structure and individual agency

  • social inequality

  • modern societies

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should be able to

  • explain the meaning of sociological concepts and how they relate to different theoretical models

  • describe the most central trends in recent sociological theories

  • demonstrate the relations between the classical and more recent sociological theories

  • applying new theories and understandings to traditional sociological topics

Teaching methods

Lectures, group work, supervision and self-study.

In addition preparation for lectures, group work and etc. We expect that the students actively work on mandatory coursework/work requirement.

Expected scope of work is approximately 270 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

5-hour individual written exam under supervision. Graded A-F.
