Recommended prerequisites

The teaching of the course requires previous knowledge of Spanish equivalent to level 2 from upper secondary school, alternatively B1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. It is recommended to have completed Spanish language 1. Instruction is mainly in Spanish. It is not recommended to follow the course without prior knowledge, as this will be very laborious.

Course contents

The course focuses on developing the students' communicative competence in Spanish by working with authentic written and oral material. In the work with different dialects and varieties of spoken Spanish language, emphasis will be placed on increasing the student's competence in understanding and expressing themselves orally in Spanish, and being able to adapt the language use to different communication situations. The course also deals with central language structures in Spanish.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: On successful completion of the course, students should

  • have knowledge of varied language structures in the Spanish language

  • know different varieties of Spanish language

  • have knowledge of differences between formal and informal language

  • have knowledge of general features of scientific writing

Skills: On successful completion of the course, students should be able to

  • communicate with good pronunciation and intonation in Spanish

  • master central language structures in Spanish

  • understand longer oral and written authentic texts in different genres

  • master various spontaneous communication situations in Spanish

  • analyse Spanish usage in a reflective manner

General competence: On successful completion of the course, students should be able to

  • analyse and evaluate own learning and communication strategies

  • demonstrate contrastive competence Norwegian-Spanish or own mother tongue - Spanish

  • present academic themes included in the course, both orally and in writing, in an understandable and structured manner and with the use of source references

  • reflect on their own work to further develop their communicative competence in Spanish

Examination requirements

Approved working portfolio with compulsory activities. The activities are described in more detail in the semester plan.
Compulsory attendance requirement: 70%.
Students in the teacaher education: The practical placement must be completed and passed.
All other students: A project assignment must be approved.

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars, workshops and group work. Student-active work methods and use of digital resources for learning. For students in teacher education for levels 8-13, professional supervised work experience is included. The students' active participation in practical exercises is necessary to develop good language skills, therefore participation in parts of the course is compulsory. The scope of work is estimated at 400 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.
