Prerequisites

Students must have passed all their examinations in connection with both the knowledge area BULL and the knowledge area on which the bachelor¿s thesis takes its starting point.

Knowledge areas: Children¿s development, play and learning; Society, religion and ethics; Language, text and mathematics; Art, culture and creativity; Nature, health and movement.

Course contents

The bachelor¿s thesis is a knowledge-based work completed on either an individual or group basis. Various approaches may be chosen: the thesis may be an empirical work, a dissemination work or a literary study. The thesis is to take its starting point in a professionally relevant problem connected with one of the subjects included in the pre-school teacher education study programme.

Knowledge

Upon course completion students will have

  • Insight into central scientific-theoretical perspectivess on educational research

  • Knowledge about research methods relevant for studies of activities relating to the daycare centre

  • Special knowledge about the professional practice course in which the individual student has studied in-depth through working on their bachelor¿s thesis

  • Knowledge about various dissemination techniques in connection with the presentation of professional-pedagogical themesm connected with the bachelor¿s thesis

Skill

Upon course completion students will be able to

  • Apply their scientific-theoretical and methodological knowledge when working on their own bachelor¿s thesis

  • Critically analyse relevant research on children, daycare centre practice and the pre-school teacher¿s professional practice

  • Demonstrated acquired skills in academic writing and critical use of sources

  • Apply pedagogical and other relevant theory when encountering various practical, professional and ethical problems

  • Disseminate the thesis¿ practical and theoretical content in a comprehensible manner in a format suitable to the target group and the knowledge area on which the thesis has its starting point

General competence.

Students

Can demonstrate professional involvement in important questions regarding children and the daycare centre and be able to analyse and disseminate complex professional research-based material in a convincing manner

Can relate to research-ethical problems in an independent manner

Examination requirements

Students must receive approval for their problem and participated in the compulsory activities as described in the course schedule in Fronter.

Teaching methods

Lectures on scientific theory, methodology, use of sources and academic writing 

Compulsory group seminars including discussions of problems and methodsIndividual compulsory advisement
Compulsory presentation/dissemination of the thesis in a format adapted to the subject on which the thesis takes its starting point and in the approach chosen by the student

Evaluation

Course evaluation is conducted at midterm. A final evaluation is conducted as required.

Assessment methods and criteria

The thesis' written scope varies in relation to choice of approach. A development or dissemination work requires an academic text of 15-20 pages. A traditional empirical or theoretical work requires a length of 25-30 pages. The thesis is digitally submitted. Differentiated marks are awarded.
