Course contents

The course is primarily aimed at giving students the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills for the practice of leadership through experience in a business context. In order to act as a manager, the ability to perform operational management and knowledge of current planning and resource management systems is essential. The course will examine challenges management might face, as well as different forms of management such as service management, situational based management, value based management, and coaching. Furthermore, the course will present theories and concepts of how to handle recruitment processes, appraisals, communication and conflicts, and how managers must organize and manage efforts to establish a positive work environment and follow the social rules at work. The course will also discuss how managers must create a positive environment for learning and development of skills and competences, as well as for creating employee-driven innovations.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course the students should be able to demonstrate:

  • knowledge of what motivates employees

  • knowledge of various aspects of the development of human resources

  • knowledge of labor laws and regulations

  • reflective skills, on their own management behavior

Examination requirements

Compulsory attendance: 80%

Teaching methods

Full day seminars with lectures, group work, reflection and dialogue. More information in Canvas at the start of the semester. Estimated worklaod is about 200 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Group-based home examination/pre-project report (100%). Conducted in groups of 3 students. Letter grades.
