Prerequisites

The admission requirements for the Executive MBA is a completed bachelor's degree or equivalent education consisting of at least 180 ECTS and a minimum of two years relevant work experience after the completion of the education.

Relevant work experience is herein work experience within management or work experience from other positions with independent responsibilities

Recommended prerequisites

Good knowledge of the English language is recommended.

Course contents

Main topics:

  • Concepts and tools for strategic management

  • The development of strategy as an academic discipline

  • Models for planning, positioning, analysis of competitors, value chain and business clusters

  • Strategic planning and emerging strategy

  • Micro and macro levels in strategy development, dynamic capacities and abilities for change and development

  • Vision, goals, principles, `policies¿, ideas, mission and values; systemic thinking and modes of collective action

  • Efficiency, creativity, innovation, strategy and structural preconditions

  • Virtual teams and understanding virtual interaction

  • Strategic management, leadership principles values and ethics

  • How developing a strategy can enable identification of new business opportunities.

Learning outcomes

The student is to:

  • Acquire an understanding of strategy and the discipline's key concepts and theories

  • Have the ability to apply key models on competition, positioning and value systems (including understanding the limits of the models)

  • Identify and relate to ethical dilemmas in strategic management

  • Develop a business model and understand the key characteristics of different types of business models

  • Understand the inter-linkages between strategy, organisation, financial management, efficiency, and innovation

  • Understand systemic preconditions for interaction and virtual communication in development of strategy and innovation

  • Have the ability to identify and develop new business areas

Examination requirements

Mandatory assignments and oral presentation (group of 2-5 students).

Teaching methods

Lectures and group work at three sessions within the semester, each of them consisting of a two-day session. Net based teaching through Canvas. Completion of two essays between the sessions.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Term paper (grup of 2-5 students). Letter grades.
