Course contents

The students will gain knowledge about the theory and methods of the terminology field, as well as practical skills to work with terminology related to professional texts targeted at different audiences.

The tasks of the course focus on research-based knowledge about terminology work, standardization and harmonization of concepts. Different terminology resources and tools (like term bases, corpora and standards) will be critically assessed and used in practical tasks. The course also focuses on the role of terminology in effective professional communication, seen in light of national language politics and the need for standardization and harmonization of terminology.

After completing the course, the student will have in-depth knowledge about

  • terminology as a scientific field, and method and key concepts in the theory of terminology

  • principals for creating terms and writing definitions

  • practical terminology work, standardization and harmonization

  • language politics, parallel use of multiple languages and loss of domain

After completing the course, the student will be able to

  • correctly put the foundational concepts of terminology to use

  • select terms based on established criteria

  • organize concepts into concept systems

  • correctly put the principles for writing definitions to use, and defend their own decisions

  • critically assess and use terminology tools and resources

  • argue for the role of terminology in effective professional communication, both within the field and externally, and for its use in digital language tools and the public sector

Examination requirements

Students must hand in and pass five written assignments. This will be specified in Canvas.

Teaching methods

The course consists of seminars and practical, tutor guided exercises. The course reading will be reviewed and discussed in the seminars, and the exercises will also be used as foundation for student discussions. Students will also complete and hand in multiple assignments, both individually and in groups. Estimated workload: 270 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Course portfolio exam containing a selection of the student’s own work handed in during the course. The portfolio will consist of three of the texts, all weighted equally. Detailed information about the portfolio will be given on Canvas. Grade A to F.
