Course contents

Students will be placed with translation businesses partnered with the University of Agder, both in Norway and abroad (subject to applicable agreements and current capacity). During the placement, the students will receive training and guided work experience pertaining to translation and management of translation projects.

Knowledge

The student

• has in-depth knowledge about the workings of a translation business, including internal and external communication, customer service, workflow, quality assurance and ethical standards.

• has advanced insight into techniques and methods of project management and translation, and into the quality requirements relevant to certain types of products and applications.

Skills

The student

• can reflect on and critically approach all areas of translation projects and project management and is able to suggest changes and improvements.

• can complete advanced translation tasks according to the procedures and methods of the company.

General competence

The student

• is able to adapt to the employment requirements in a business and can function well as part of staff.

• is able to orient him/herself and critically reflect upon the development in the various fora, bodies and organizations that make political and market-related decisions about the development of the profession.

Examination requirements

Students must submit two individual written reports for approval. These reports are to be written on a given form and handed in by set deadlines. The students must have at least 80% attendance out of the agreed upon work hours, and this must be confirmed in writing by the host business.

Teaching methods

The students will be interning with translation businesses in Norway or abroad. They will complete a variety of translation tasks and gain insight into project management under guidance of their tutors from UiA and the host business. Estimated workload: 270 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

The internship will be concluded with a written semester assignment of about 4500 words. Detailed information about the assignment will be given in Canvas. The assignment is graded as pass/fail.
