Course contents

The course allows students to deepen their knowledge in their main instrument/area of focus within their chosen specialization. The repertoire will partly depend on the theme chosen by each student for the master's thesis (cf. project description submitted at admission), and the repertoire shall be determined in collaboration with the artistic supervisor. The theme chosen by each student for the master's thesis and the student's own work as a performing musician and artist will largely determine the relevant areas. This may also include improvisation, original compositions, adaptations (remixes), and arrangements. The main focus of the course is practical music performance, including artistic supervision, interpretation, music production, and concert presentation. The course emphasizes individuality, artistic distinctive character, and musical identity, aiming to provide students with advanced knowledge in the field of music. The course includes extensive work in music studios to develop skills in composition and the use of relevant music technological tools, including the development of tools tailored to each student's working method. In addition, there will be practical work in the form of concerts, compositions, music production, and creative studio work. The work is conveyed through independent project and recorded music and a final exam concerts.

 

In the specialization of Performing Music, emphasis is placed on industry knowledge and entrepreneurship, artistic distinctive character, and networking.

 

In the specialization of Electronic Music, emphasis is placed on composition/songwriting and creative use of music technology. Performing activities are central, both in terms of recordings and concert performances. The practical work is designed to facilitate the development of artistic distinctive character, individual expression, and presentation.

 

In the specialization of World Music, emphasis is placed on concert presentation, genre knowledge, artistic distinctive character, expression, and presentation, based on either independent work or general concert repertoire for the final exam concert. There will also be a focus on ethnology and historical and stylistic features of traditional music from various countries. This is done through collaboration with regional, national, and international actors.

 

In the specialization of Songwriting, emphasis is placed on further development, completion, and dissemination of the textual, musical, and performative through artistic material and reflection on one's own artistic practice.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge within the field of popular music and specialized insight into music performance and creation in their main instrument/area of focus.

  • Master various forms of communication and present themselves as reflective music communicators.

  • Convey comprehensive independent work and master various forms of expression within their chosen specialization.

  • Conduct an independent artistic project under supervision and in accordance with applicable research ethical norms.

  • Apply their knowledge and skills to new areas to carry out advanced tasks and projects within a specialized field.

Teaching methods

In the specializations of Performing Music, Electronic Music, World Music, and Songwriting, individual artistic supervision is provided in the main instrument/area of focus and group teaching where 1st and 2nd-year students are gathered. The teaching format is tailored to each specialization and may include lectures, workshops, masterclasses, and/or collaborative group work. Interpretation is conducted in group sessions where all specializations in the 1st and 2nd years participate together.

 

Parts of the instruction are mandatory.

These parts will be presented in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

 

The expected workload is 27 hours per credit.

Evaluation

The course coordinator, in consultation with the student representative, determines the form of evaluation and whether the courses shall have mid-term or final evaluations in accordance with the quality system chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

A concert of approximately 60 minutes and a submitted 20-minute studio production. The program shall include examples of the student's own compositions/arrangements within the chosen specialization.
