Course contents

The course provides students with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of their main instrument/area of expertise within their chosen specialization, and the repertoire shall be determined in collaboration with the artistic supervisor. This may also include improvisation, original compositions, adaptations (remixes), and arrangements. Central to the course is the practical performance of music, including main instrument instruction, artistic guidance, interpretation, music production, and performance. The course emphasizes individuality, artistic uniqueness, and musical identity, aiming to provide students with broader knowledge of the field of music.

 

In the specialization in Performing Music, group guidance is provided with a focus on establishing one's own artistic work, as well as themes such as mental health and musical communication.

 

In the Electronic Music specialization, emphasis is placed on composition/songwriting and creative use of music technology. In addition, students will work on performing activities such as concerts, music production, and creative studio work.

In the World Music specialization, emphasis is placed on concert presentation and artistic uniqueness, expression, and presentation. There will also be a focus on ethnology, historical, and stylistic features from various countries' traditional music.

 

In the Songwriting specialization, emphasis is placed on artistic distinctive character and reflection on one's own artistic practice. Through various methods and approaches to the textual, musical, and performative aspects of songwriting, particular focus is placed on the process of creative work.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of independent working methods related to their main instrument/area of expertise

  • Work independently, goal-oriented, and reflectively with artistic challenges

  • Apply relevant methods for artistic development work independently within the field of music

  • Utilize their knowledge and skills to carry out advanced artistic projects within a specialized area

Teaching methods

For the specializations in Performing Music, Electronic Music, World Music, and Songwriting, individual artistic guidance is provided in main instrument/area of expertise, and group instruction where 1st and 2nd-year students are gathered. The teaching format is tailored to each specialization and may take the form of lectures, workshops, masterclasses, and/or ensemble/group work. Interpretation is provided in group instruction where all specializations in the 1st and 2nd year are combined. The Interpretation is organized so that both 1st and 2nd-year students participate. Parts of the instruction are mandatory. These parts will be presented in Canvas at the beginning of the semester. The expected workload is 27 hours per credit point.

Evaluation

The course coordinator, in consultation with student representatives, determines the evaluation method and whether mid-term or final evaluations should be conducted, in accordance with the quality system outlined in Chapter 4.1. Information regarding the evaluation method for the course will be published in Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

  • Part 1: Various audio productions totaling 10 minutes.

  • Part 2: A reflective essay of up to 1500 words. Further information will be provided in Canvas.

Both parts must be passed to pass the exam.
