Course contents

The bachelor thesis is a larger individual work. This work can either be based on the specialization course in the fifth semester or on another relevant, chosen music-related topic, with relevance to the student's main instrument or own compositions. Based on the chosen topic, the student must define research questions and choose an appropriate research method for the bachelor thesis. These must be approved by the supervisor.

Lectures will provide an introduction on how to write a bachelor's thesis. In addition, the lectures will focus on form, structure, data processing, data presentation and literature references for producing a scientific text.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should:

  • be able to formulate research questions and elaborate through discourses related to popular musicology

  • be able to plan and conduct a survey in accordance with ethical guidelines

  • be able to search and evaluate and apply current research literature in the thesis

  • be able to work independently and know general requirements within research

  • be able to convey professional knowledge based on the chosen research questions

Examination requirements

  • approved attendance in compulsory classes

  • submitted and approved project description for the bachelor thesis

  • compulsory participation in two seminars

Teaching methods

Teaching is provided as lectures, seminars, and individual supervision. During two seminar sessions, the student must first present their project through a project description along with the research questions and planned methods for carrying out the project. The second session focus on results of the thesis and a collective discussion of these.

Parts of the teaching are compulsory. These parts are presented in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

Expected work scope is 27 hours per credits.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
