Course contents

This course focus on composing music for various popular music genres. We apply different composition techniques and develop melodic themes and harmonic variations. In addition, we focus on how to variate different parts of a composition and the balance between composition and arrangement.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should:

  • have obtained knowledge of various compositional principles

  • be able to apply methods of composing for different popular music genres

  • be able to variate melodic and harmonic themes in parts of a composition

  • have knowledge of different approaches on how to develop melodic fragments into melodic themes

  • be able to structure different elements and parts in a composition

Examination requirements

  • approved attendance in compulsory classes

  • approved 1–3 assignments

Teaching methods

Lectures and group sessions, as well as individual feedback in Canvas on assignments. Students applies digital software tools such as Sibelius and Logic Pro.

 

Parts of the teaching are compulsory. These parts are presented in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

 

Expected scope of work is 27 hours per. credits.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual portfolio submission with 5–7 minutes of composed music with a score. Assignment is presented at the beginning of the semester in Canvas. An overall grade is given for the portfolio.

 

Grade expression: Pass / Fail.
