Course contents

The course focus on how to create your own workplace and provides the student knowledge of the stakeholders in Norwegian and international music industry: booking, management, record companies, clients and music publishers. In addition, a focus is provided in copyrights, how to run their own business and set up budgets. An introduction to funding opportunities for performing musicians in Norway are provided.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should:

  • have knowledge of methods and strategies for creating their own workplace in the music industry

  • have knowledge of economic mechanisms in the music industry

  • understand the significance of entrepreneurship in personal development and in developing a career in the music industry

  • have knowledge of financial and legal aspects in your start up business

  • have acquired methods for working independently with their own business and career path

  • be able to create a progress plan for a project, both artistically and financially

  • have knowledge of the Norwegian and international music industry and various stakeholders and applicable grants in the industry

Examination requirements

  • Approved attendance in compulsory classes

  • Approved assignments:

  • Book reports. Scope approx. 500 - 1000 words

  • Career plans. Scope approx. 500 - 1000 words.

Teaching methods

The tuition is provided as lectures and group supervision.

 

Parts of the teaching are compulsory. These parts are presented in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

 

Expected work scope is 27 hours per credits.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Individual oral exam. Duration 10-15 minutes. A case assignment is delivered 2 weeks before the exam.
