Course contents

The incoming exchange students will work to develop their skills in music performance through a broad repertoire in solo- and chamber music. A special instrumental focus will be on material essential for developing the individual student`s artistic proficiency. Another important aspect will be to enable the students to lead, develop and participate in musical projects, and to introduce the incoming exchange students for the Norwegian culture and   traditions in Classical music.  

The students will work on orchestral or choral skills and will develop their proficiency in solo- and chamber music playing. The students shall learn how to interact professionally at different levels.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, the student shall: 

  • be able to display a genuine integration of musical insight, technical command and communicative conviction.  
  • have gained knowledge on Norwegian traditions and repertoire within Classical music 
  • have experience with musical and artistic projects including written and oral presentations of concert productions. 
  • be able to display sophisticated and secure control of the instrument 
  • be able to express musical intentions through personal musical ideas and interpretation 
  • be able to display awareness of aspects of ensemble and communication between collaborating players. 
  • be able to discuss and exchange views related to interpretation, instrumental challenges and general issues related to the subject 

Examination requirements

  • Participation in orchestral or choir productions and/or other musical and artistic projects. 
  • One soloistic concert performance  
  • Participation in one chamber music concert. 
  • Participation in obligatory tuition activities

Teaching methods

This subject is centered around one-to-one tuition in main instrument and chamber music. Additional principal study lectures will be offered through masterclasses, workshops, chamber music coaching and practical seminars led by high-profile performers.  Digital tools will be used if expedient. The student must have access to a personal computer. 

Semester plans will be posted on Canvas at semester-opening. The workload is estimated to 27 hours per credit. 

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual assessment in main instrument and chamber music - repertoire (free of choice) of appr. 30 minutes duration followed by an interview.   Assessment: Graded A-F
