On successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • design and create a written academic work promoting new knowledge

Teaching methods

The course makes use of individual supervision and independent work.

The study programme coordinator will discuss and choose the supervisor(s) together with the students. All students are obliged to have at least one in-house supervisor. According to the scope of the thesis and the interests of the students, two students may work together in a group.

The student is supervised by a University of Agder faculty member and potentially a mentor from the music and cultural field. Each student will in consultation with the course leaders and/or mentor choose the topic for research where appropriate.

The work on the master’s thesis is set up in cooperation with the supervisor according to supervision agreement.

Parts of the lessons and individual supervision are mandatory. These parts are communicated at the beginning of the semester through Canvas. The expected workload for students is 27 hours per credit.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

The Master’s thesis is individual or in groups of two students (upon application).

Individual thesis: Length: 50-80 pages.

In groups of two students: Length: 80-100 pages.

Students writing their thesis together, will be awarded the same grade.
