Prerequisites

  • 120 credits in the student’s education plan must be passed at the beginning of the semester for the bachelor’s thesis.
  • The topic and research question for the thesis must be approved by the course coordinator/the tutor of the thesis.

Course contents

In the bachelor’s thesis the students shall integrate knowledge and skills acquired through the bachelor’s programme, and apply it to one of the following specialization tracks:

  • E-sports athlete, trainer, or manager
  • E-sports related business, marketing and other activities related to business
  • Technology and innovation
  • Health and Education

The bachelor’s thesis should contribute to developing students' ability to use scientific theories and research methods. The students shall write an academic report in a clear language and structuring it according to academic standards. Through the work the students should demonstrate critical reflection and the ability to distinguish between his/her contribution and the contribution from others.

The thesis must reflect real problems from society and the business sector or research and development activity. The work should include a survey of the state of knowledge in the field, which should be accounted for in the project report. Personal work should be linked to the results of the survey. The course should also provide practical experience in project work and develop independence and collaborative skills.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the students should be able to:

  • Plan and carry out an independent research or development project under supervision,
  • Write an academic report using a clear language and the base criteria for references and academic structure.
  • Define a relevant research question and a clear approach to the issue addressed.
  • Select and apply relevant scientific theories and methods, and critically assess various sources of information.
  • Document a good theoretical overview, and depth in his/her specialization area.
  • Provide a scientific analysis and discussion relevant to the issue addressed.
  • Demonstrate critical reflection and the ability to distinguish between his/her contribution and the contribution from others.
  • Analyze and discuss the role of academic E-sports in society and future challenges related to E-sports.
  • Analyze and discuss environmental and economic perspectives related to the issue addressed.
  • Have an understanding of some of the business mechanisms connected to esports
  • Contribute to innovation and entrepreneurship through participation in the development and implementation of sustainable and socially beneficial products, systems, and/or solutions.
  • Communicate an academic work orally and in writing.
  • Understand the dynamics of group work and be able to contribute constructively to such work.

Teaching methods

An independent work, individually or in groups of two, carried out under supervision.

Every student is entitled to a tutor for the bachelor project and the tutor will arrange sessions for guidance in both structuring the report as well as discussing possible angles for it. A minimum of 5 hours supervision is compulsory for each project.

There will be given lectures in relevant topics such as academic writing, sustainability, environment, and economics.

The expected workload for the average student is 800 hours.

Evaluation

The study program manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written report, performed in groups (max 2 people) or individually. Adjustable oral presentation. The assessment given on the thesis may be individually adjusted after the oral presentation. Graded assessment.
