Recommended prerequisites

All courses in the first and second years of the bachelor's program. If the student lacks more than 15 credits in compulsory courses in the programme, the student will normally not be able to write a bachelor's thesis. Students who have inadequate progression in compulsory courses will be contacted.

Course contents

The course consists of two parts:

 

The first part of the course consists of lectures that introduce research process and science philosophical underpinnings of different research approaches. It offers the students basic information on how to conduct and write a bachelor's thesis, and how to use library’s resources.

The second part of the course consists of bachelor’s thesis work and supervision. Based on their chosen topic, students are expected to familiarize themselves with relevant academic literature, formulate research questions, select an appropriate research design for the thesis, execute the project and report the results and findings. The thesis is written in groups of two or three students. The scope of the thesis work is designed for groups of three students.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • understand philosophy of science and its implications for the research process.

  • conduct an independent study with a research-based approach.

  • plan and implement the various steps in the research process.

  • search, apply and critically evaluate scholarly literature.

  • reflect the research ethical aspects relevant to the selected research design.

  • reflect on one's work and make adjustments under supervision.

Teaching methods

Lectures, group work and plenary sessions. Expected amount of work is about 400 hours per student. Supervision will be given in plenary sessions with mandatory participation. More information will be given in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Bachelor's thesis is conducted in groups of 2-3 students. The grade is given per bachelor’s thesis, resulting in a collective grade for the groups. Assessment expression: letter grade, A-F.
