Recommended prerequisites

It is assumed that students have passed all previous examinations in line with full-time academic progression. Students who lack up to 30 ECTS credits at the beginning of the sixth semester may apply for exemption. Exemption will only be granted if the students do not lack coursework that forms the basis for the specialisation.

Course contents

The first part of the course gives a general introduction to research, philosophy of science, how to write a bachelor's thesis, the use of library resources, and proper citing of sources. The thesis is written in groups of three students, and the groups choose a topic from a list made available in Canvas prior to semester start.

In the second part, while working on their thesis, the students will receive guidance on the various steps in the research process. This includes discussion of selected articles in the field of research as well as work related to the topic chosen for the bachelors thesis. Based on their chosen topic, students are expected to define a research questions, as well as select an appropriate research design for the thesis.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course the student should:

  • understand the role and purpose of research in his/her selected field of specialisation

  • have knowledge of philosophy of science and its implications for the research process

  • have knowledge of the various steps in the research process

  • know ethical aspects that are relevant to their bachelor thesis

  • carry out an independent study with a research-based approach for a given subject or a chosen topic

Teaching methods

Lectures, group work and plenary sessions. Expected amount of work is 405 hours per student. Supervision will be given in plenary sessions. More information will be given in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

Assessment methods and criteria

The bachelors thesis is conducted in groups of 3 students. The grade is for the entire group. Letter grades.

A new, or revised, version of the bachelors thesis may be submitted one time, if it was given a fail. If the thesis has been given a passing grade it will not be possible to hand in a new or revised version in the same study program.
