Course contents

Systematic PLC programming according to IEC 61131-3, flowcharts, state-machines, ladder logic (LAD), function block diagrams (FBD), structured text (ST), structured control language (SCL), sequential flow charts (SFC)

Use of Siemens Step7 software (TIA Portal), practical assignments before main project, TCP/IP, hardware configuration.

Hardware-in-the-loop simulation using SimulationX and Real-Time LabView. Crash course in practical PID control and tuning.

Distributed control systems (DCS), design of human machine interfaces using WinCC from Siemens.

OSI PI database for storing and retrieving process data, OPC Interfaces

Support lectures on project management and report writing (master thesis template).

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to understand, design and analyse larger industrial IT systems.

Teaching methods

MAS411 is a project-based course with a lot of teamwork. Independent work on project in groups of 2-4 students, organized with supervision. Estimated work load for the average student is 27 hours per credit.

Evaluation

Course evaluation is carried out as a midterm evaluation in accordance with standard procedure in the quality assurance system, chapter 2.1.1., unless other information is given in the beginning of the semester.

Assessment methods and criteria

The project report carried out in group, with adjustable oral project presentation in group. Graded assessment. The project presentation may give grounds for individual adjustment of the assessment given on the project report.
