Course contents

The aim of the subject is to build understanding of the functionality, properties and modification of mechanical components/systems through practical work. Emphasis is placed on acquiring basic knowledge of terminology and annotation of technical drawings as well as how mechanical components are designed and produced

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student should

  • Have a basic knowledge of mechanical components & construction/machines

  • Be able to use different mechanical tools and measuring instruments

  • Have knowledge of fabrication/production methods of mechanical components

  • Be able to understand how machine components and systems are described in technical drawings

  • Have knowledge of the design process behind the development of mechanical components and systems

Examination requirements

Mandatory project work must be approved.

Teaching methods

The practical work will be done in the university workshop with professional guidance. The subject is project based and the end result is a written report. Modern digital tools are used with regards to report writing, 3D CAD and technical drawings

Expected workload for an average student is 27 hours per credit

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Project report carried out in groups with oral presentation and defense of the project. Joint assessment of project and presentation. Passed/not passed.
