Prerequisites

To formally start the master thesis, the student must have passed examinations corresponding to 75 ECTS in her/his education plan at the start of the master thesis semester. Courses on wich the Master Thesis is built upon must be passed. The topic of the master Thesis has to be approved by the University of Agder.

Course contents

In the master thesis the student focuses on a main topic in the study programme. The thesis must be research based and include research questions, theoretical frameworks, presentation of methods, empirical analysis and results.

Learning outcomes

After completing and passing the master thesis, the student is expected to:

  • have good knowledge of how to plan and carry out an independent scientific work

  • know the importance of formulating precise research questions, and understand the role of theory in research

  • be able to select relevant methods to collect data and information

  • know the central principles to analyze and discuss empirical materials

  • have in depth knowledge on the theme of the master thesis and be able to critically reflect on these theories and their own results

Examination requirements

Compulsory meetings with supervisor at a minimum of 2 tutorials.

Teaching methods

Independent work. The student must consult a supervisor for at least 2 meetings. The duration of the Master Thesis is normally one semester, which gives an estimated work load of minimum 810 learning hours for the student.The master thesis is normally offered as a spring term course. On application, the Faculty may accept delivery of the Master Thesis in the autumn term provided that the student fulfills the pre-requisites, and that there is vacant capacity among the supervisors. The writing seminar is offered in the spring semester only.

Evaluation

In consultation with the student representative, The Head of study programme decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written report. Submission in Inspera. Graded assessment. Master's thesis carried out in a group. The grade can be adjusted on the basis of the oral group presentation. The assessment for the written master's thesis is published at the same time as the final grade. More information is available in Canvas.
