Course contents

The course explores the design and use of different types of management control systems including topics such as cost management, performance management, Balanced Scorecard, digitalization, sustainability and ethical issues related to management accounting.

The critique of traditional management accounting is presented, and examples of alternative approaches such as "beyond budgeting" are discussed.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course the student are able to:

  • Use cost management considerations for decision making.

  • Apply the balanced scorecard as tool of performance management

  • Critically evaluate Key Performance Indicators

  • Discuss the problems of traditional budgeting and its alternatives

  • Identify ethical issues related to management accounting and control

  • Evaluate challenges of digitalization from a management accounting perspective.

  • Discuss the link between sustainability, management accounting and organisational decision making

Examination requirements

Teaching methods

Lectures and project work/presentations in groups. For more detalils please see Canvas in the beginning of the semester.

Workload for the average student is approximately 200 hours.

Evaluation

The Head of study programme, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual written examination, 4 hours: 60%

Written project assignment in groups: 40% of the final grade.
