ME-200 Introduction to Scientific Methods and Statistics, or equivalent

Course contents

  • The work process in scientific works

  • Research ethics

  • Literature search in scientific databases

  • Preparation of project description

  • Preparation of scientific texts

  • Formal requirements for the bachelor thesis

  • Reference management tools

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student will

  • be able to plan and carry out a project (bachelor’s thesis)

  • be able to reflect on current research ethics issues

  • be able to find and assess current research literature and use it to shed light on the chosen problem

  • be able to write professional texts according to scientific norms

  • be able to discuss research findings in relation to previous research and established knowledge

  • be able to give and receive constructive criticism on professional work

  • demonstrate the ability to make critical and analytical judgements

Examination requirements

Approved project outline. Participated in mandatory seminar supervision groups, including contribution with own presentation and opposition to fellow students' work.

Teaching methods

The working methods will vary between lectures, seminar supervision groups (8 hours compulsory), supervision and independent work on the bachelor's thesis.

Estimated student workload is 540 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written bachelor's thesis, two students together, or individually by agreement with the course coordinator.
