Sport in society:

  • Clarification of important sport-related concepts from a societal perspective

Sports performance:

  • Distinctions between amateur and professional sport training/participation

  • Key physical and mental factors influencing sports performance in the contexts of training and competition

  • Basic methods of training planning and periodization in the development of sport expertise

  • Group cohesion, team building and performance culture as social constructions

Recovery, nutrition, and sport nutrition:

  • Recovery in a sport context

  • Basics of physical and mental recovery

  • Digestion of food

  • Macro- and micronutrients

  • Basic sport nutrition recommendations

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate basic knowledge about the evolution of sports and the development of sport training.

  • Understand basic physical and mental training principles in various sport contexts.

  • Understand fundamental distinctions and controversies regarding the roles of play and deliberate practice in the development of expertise.

  • Demonstrate basic knowledge about group cohesion, team building, and performance culture.

  • Understand basic physical and mental recovery in a sport context.

  • Understand basic nutrition and sport nutrition.

Examination requirements

Mandatory tasks must be completed and approved. Tasks will be presented in Canvas.

Teaching methods

The course is taught as a combination of lectures, group work, case discussions, and individual tasks. The expected workload for the average student is 135 hours.

Evaluation

The study program manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

3-hour written individual examination. Graded assessment.
