Teaching language

The course language is English. If the candidate group suggests it, the teaching can take place in a Scandinavian language.

Participants must be admitted to a relevant PhD program.

Course contents

The course will present several approaches and forms of interviews in research projects from different epistemological and methodological positions. Based on the lecturers' and the candidates' presentation of their projects, the course will explore and discuss the interview method, interview in combination with other data collection methods, strategies for analyzing interview data and the ethical aspects of conducting interviews.

The course will provide insight into using interviews through examples from research on religion, art, education, and migration from various research arenas such as the family, the health sector, schools, kindergarten, and religious communities.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, candidates will have acquired:

  • In-depth knowledge of epistemological and methodological positions and assumptions using interview as a method
  • Ability to apply the knowledge for qualified choices of interview forms, approach to interview data, and analysis
  • Ability to reflect on connections throughout the research process (epistemological positions, problems, data collection, analysis, and dissemination)
  • In-depth knowledge of to use photography and be able to reflect on when such technology is suitable and the challenges and opportunities the use of photography entails
  • Ability to master data analysis and interpretation
  • Ability to formulate and discuss suitable validity questions using interviews as a method

Examination requirements

Compulsory participation in lectures and workshops.

Presentation of the candidates' reflections on the use of interview as a method or plans for data collection from interviews, as well as ideas on how the data should be analyzed.

Teaching methods

The course is organized over three days and will consist of a combination of lectures, seminar discussions and workshops.
