Introduction to offshore wind energy - Significance of offshore wind - evolution of wind energy technologies- characteristics of offshore wind energy-national-regional and global status of offshore wind-future prospects.
Basic principles of wind energy conversion - Wind turbine power and torque- power-torque relationships- tip speed ratio-dynamic matching.
Classification of wind turbines - Based on axis of rotation, number of blades, size, upwind/down wind, pitch/stall regulated - onshore and offshore turbines-innovative turbines- comparative performance of different types of turbines.
Aerodynamics of wind turbines - Airfoils-lift and drag- basic aerodynamic theories- axial momentum theory-blade element theory- blade element momentum theory.
Wind turbine design considerations - Assumptions, design parameters, design methodology, design example, performance of the designed rotor.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- get an insight to the significance and prospects of offshore wind energy in the national, regional, and global perspectives.
- understand the basic physics of wind energy conversion.
- get acquainted with different types of wind energy conversion systems.
- understand the basic aerodynamics of wind turbines.
- get an overview on the design approaches of wind turbines.
Teaching methods
Online lectures and exercises. Estimated average workload for the student is approximately 70 hours.

Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment of the group project assignment leading to Pass/Fail. Further information on the assessment criterion will be given in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.
